The Hive New York City Fund is a collective action fund comprised of The New York Community Trust, the Altman Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, and an anonymous donor. It is advised by a committee of donors, practitioners, and leaders in the local youth digital media learning field. The Fund is designed to support innovation, digital equity, and leadership among members of the Mozilla Hive NYC Learning Network, which include youth-serving nonprofits, museums, libraries, and individual educators and technologists.
Hive NYC Innovation Fund Guidelines
Mozilla Hive NYC Learning Network invites Hive NYC members to apply for a grant from its Innovation Fund. The Innovation Fund provides one-year seed grants of up to $20,000 for Hive NYC member organizations seeking to prototype new educational tools, programs, or pedagogical approaches to create equitable digital media learning opportunities for youth.
Awards to this fund are meant for projects that:
Create and test a prototype of a new digital media learning tool or educational program;
Develop new approaches to teaching and learning about digital media and the open web;
Develop new approaches and strategies for promoting digital equity through learning experiences for youth.
Strong proposals will clearly describe projects that:
Develop innovative models and approaches for teaching and learning with digital media. This includes iterating on or approaching an existing model or practice from a new perspective, or creating a new method altogether.
Provide young people with equitable access to quality learning opportunities that are peer-supported, youth-centered, academically- and/or community-oriented, culturally responsive, and promote self-determination--or support the professional development of educators to provide such opportunities.
Allow youth to actively create--rather than passively consume--original digital content and share it with friends, family, community, and the general public.
Help youth build skills that promote their ability to think critically, problem solve, be creative and innovative, communicate clearly, collaborate with others, and develop positive self-identity.
This funding opportunity is only open to Hive NYC members. Proposals from organizations that are not part of the Hive NYC network will not be considered.
Each member is eligible to receive one grant per year of up to $20,000.
Grant recipients will be eligible to renew their innovation grant for an additional year of funding to continue piloting their project if initial prototype is successful and if desired.
Multiple member organizations may submit one proposal and each receive grants of up to $20,000 if they are partnering on a shared project.
